Georges ear, that was an accident he was aiming for the death eaters hand.
I like the fact that he was the right hand man for both DD and TR/LV
Also ging back to my post, my part of what dd is not actually planning his death is there in ThE Princes tale, for the fact that he asked how long he had to live and then said to snape that he would have preffered snape to do it rather than
1. dying horribly from his own stupidity (even the best make mistakes)
2. Didnt want it to be messy had Greyback got him him and
3. "Or dear bellatrix who likes to play with her food before she eats it"

If Snape finished off DD, he would gain almost absolute trust from Death EAters andVOldemort. It would also give Voldemort a false feeling of triumph, which is a dangerous thing to have.

It certainly did give him a false sense of security, and I would say his death proved that was a dangerous mentality to have. In fact, I think it is safe to say that it was always his greatest weakness. LV never anticipated someone discovering his secrets until it was far too late. He should have suspected DD of knowing about his horcruxes long before he learned that Harry was destroying them. The diary made it obvious, and LV knew that it had been destroyed. But he thought he was invincible. I love that LV, who thought he was unique and special, and above all the rest of mankind, died with a mundane finality, with a thud like any other man. It was perfect.
I think Jo purposefully left Snape wide open. I don't think we could argue that he was completely on the evil side anymore; the Prince's Tale refutes that old viewpoint, but it is definitely arguable that he was working both sides. And I think that is the way that Jo wanted it. I think she wanted his case to continue to be argued.

Yes, and it also makes for interesting (and sometimes quite heated) arguments. It's funny how people can get so passionately attached to their opinions! (Myself included)

Yes, I don't know that I could argue that I am correct in being so passionate about my opinions lol, but I could definitely argue why I think my opinions are correct! Seriously, though, Jo is in the States, now, and she has been talking about how the evolution of Snape is something that she is really proud of. I don't remember the link, but anyone interested in what she's been saying can check out mugglenet.com and go to the link from there.
