The main House Elves in the book were:

DOBBY
WINKY
KRETCHER

Dobby has appeared in 6 books he saved Harry in Book 2, He appeared working for Dumbledor at Hogwarts in Book 3, He helped Harry in his trials in Book 4, He told Harry about the Room of Requirement in Book 5, He helped Harry keep track of Draco's wanderings in Book 6, and he Died a HERO helping Harry and his friends escape in Book 7.

Winky made only a couple of appearances.

Kreatcher appeared in Book 5, and disliked everybody but the House of Black's. He was willed to Harry ,in Book 6 he appears to help Dobby keep track of Draco even though he did not want to. In Book 7 we learn more about him and his life and learn that he was put through hell, but in the end he becomes a hero and leads the Hogwarts house elves against the Death Eaters.

Oh my goodness I cried like a baby when Dobby died and Harry buried him!!! I didn't at all for some reason when Hedwig died, maybe because Hedwig wasn't mentioned as much as Dobby throughout the books, I don't know! Dobby was like a little kid when you look at him in the movies and picture him when you read the books!

Dobby has appeared in 5 books to be precise, he never appeared in the third book. I was also heartbroken when Dobby died, it was good of Harry to label his tombstone 'Free elf, Dobby'....
