The Great Debate of Snape and Why he is Good
Ever since I started reading Harry Potter, I thought Snape as evil, scheming, and mean to anyone except Draco Malfoy, who I obtained a strong attachment to in the release of the Half-Blood Prince. However, the eve of July 20th, I went to a 9:30-2:00 party to finally recieve my copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. They were holding a Great Snape Debate, talking about if Snape was all for Harry, or all for Voldemort. I was still in shock and disbelief, and I chose that Snape was all for Harry.
When Snape killed Dumbledore, I was shaken with disbelief and hatred, just as Harry was. I knew he couldn't have killed Dumbledore under his own will. First of all, I knew he had reluctantly made the unbreakable vow. That is proven in the Deathly Hallows that he did not want to kill Dumbledore, though since the old man had told him to he did not hesitate to do so. That, and he had a couple of Death Eaters waiting for him.
Now, many people had not stuck with Snape. They saw him as the evil and intolerant man that had always treated Harry badly. However, some readers were shaken when they saw Snape's penseive memory. They now saw James as the villian, and Snape as the poor boy who was always denied.
It is shown in the Deathly Hallows that Snape was Lily's first best friend, though they started off at a bad start with him calling her, truthfully, a witch. They seem to be close to each other in Snape's second memory, almost a boyfriend-girlfriend type of thing. When Petunia turns up, however, Snape loses control of his magic, not unlike Harry, and causes a branch to fall on Petunia. Lily whirls herself up in a storm, and the entire aura of young love is stirred up like dust, and she leaves Severus shocked and hurt.
When Sev, as I prefer to call him now, accidentally let slip and called Lily a Mudblood, she decided that she couldn't be his friend anymore. Even bofore that Lily had told Sev that she couldn't be friends with him, as he had future Death Eaters as friends.
Nobody expected any of this of Sev until later on in the book. It seems that from an early age, Sev had had a strong crush on Lily. This gave him, when Voldy (a nickname copiecd from Peeves) decided to slaughter the Potters, the strong belief that he could help raise her son and pass on the love that he had had for Lily onto Harry, and get this dumb weight of fhis chest. When Sev saw that Harry was more in the appearence of his father instead of his mother, he was disappointed and took a hatred to Harry. From his negative point of veiw of James, he instantly looked at Harry as nothing more than a rat fart whose smell wouldn't go away.
Snape secretly helped Harry throughout the years, however, and worked as a double agent for both Dumbledore and Voldy. He showed his last affection for Harry, who couldn't resist watching Snape's death mournfully, by saying, "look at me." I presume this is because he wanted to see Lily's eyes one last time before his death. I hope they burned well into his memory, because Snape was for sure a good man.
I was crying my eyes out through that who thing with snapes memory. Still he was unpleasent to Harry minly because as the person above said, he looked too much like his father.
I therefore, still dontl ike snape but I dont hate him either.
I think that it seemed a little unreal that Sev would kill Dumbledore even after all the trust Dumbledore put in him... wait did I already put that above? *searches post*

When I started reading the books I figured there was a connection between Harry on Snape. As I contuned to read I was able to see the good side of Snape. It was really put out there what Snape faced in school in Order Of The Pheniox. I feel it made Snape a better person in my eyes. And I think Harry understood a more Snape at that time.
I agree to that. Harry could have talked to Snape about so many things - but would Snape really have taken to Harry? Would he overcome his hatred for Harry being James' son and not his own?
No he would never have, because Harry looked like James, even though he had his mothers eyes, from the first days on the train nsape and James really disliked each other and it grew from that.
One thing I found very interesting though, as I was listening to (of all things) the song "THE REASON" (I am thinking of doing a Snape video for youtube to the song) and it came to me.
In a "Peck of Owls" in Order of the Phoenix, when Petunia lets slip that she knows what Dementors are the following discussion happens between Harry and Petunia.
"How d'you know that?" he asked her astonished
Aunt Petunia looked quite appaled at herself. she glanced at Uncle vernon in fearful apology, then lowering her hand slightly to reveal her horsey teeth.
"I heard - that awful boy - telling her about them - years ago, she said jerkily.
"if you mean my mum and dad, why dont you use their names?" said Harry loudly, but [b]Aunt Petunia ignored him.[b/]
Now it occured to me, it WAS NOT JAMES who was the awful boy. IT WAS SNAPE!!!!!!!!!! It took me FOREVER to wor this out lol how dumb am I? the scene she finds out is in Dh and everytihng and I totally missed it because i never finished reading the stories before I started DH.
Nice writng there Dracosfiance especially that last part about how Snape wanted to look into Lily's eyes for the last time before he died...
I always thought that Snape wasn't a bad guy but I never thought that he would take such a big part in Harry's defeat of Voldemort.

You know Snape really was mistreated... he must have been under a lot of pressure working as a spy for Dumbledore. I wonder how he learned his Occulemcy, he hid all of his secrets for Voldemort. Snape was disliked by many people and he had to pretend to be Dumbledore's murderer for a year to fulfill his mission that Dumbledore had entrusted in him. DD was right about all his theories of love. He said that love is the most powerful weapon one could have and that it was Voldemort's serious flaw that he didn't understand it. Voldemort never understood what Snape went through when Lily died and he believed that he was really over her. It was the power of Snape's love for Lily that finally defeated Voldemort.

Hello everyone, I too feel like the majority here that Severus was not evil but misunderstood in his early years. I feel that from HP7 back to HP1 if you follow the signs backward the whole picture is right in front of you. Again it only goes to show that first impressions are not the only ones we should look at.
Yes it was good of Harry to name his son after snape.
Snape would have been great at occlumency for the main reason of he was so badly treated as a child he learnt to shut down emotionally from most things. the last real emotional state you see of him is him literally dying inside after lilys death. that was what killed snape, it made it so easy for him to be what he was in the end, her death, Snape had nothing to live for after that, especially considering that he only helped Harry because it waslilys son, harry looked too much like a man that tormented snape as a teenager and as the man whole stole his beloved Lily from him for snape to care too deeply for harry.
So in short It was snapes hatred and Jealousy of james that made snape hate harry and it was his love of Lily that made snape help a boy he hated.
