I would say that Dumbledore was correct - Hogwarts probably sorted people too early. Snape had to be there in Gryffindor. He was brave - a mixture of bad and good.

I feel that that Snape was not a real Slytherin. If he was he wud'nt have loved Lily Evans then(cuz she's a muggle-born).And he was one of such brave men whose bravery went unnoticed until the very end.Even when he killed Dumbledore in HBP I guessed that he was doing that on Dumbledore's orders. And I always had a soft-corner for him.But i did'nt have a slightest idea regarding his love.
He was bad to Harry sometimes cuz Harry used to irritate him(can't deny this).
He always looked gloomy cuz there was no one to care for him.His
love is not his and many like James Potter and sirius used to play pranks on him& even his parents. He was abondoned by everyone. All he wanted was Friends who were the Death Eaters so obviously they left some impact on him.So he became a Death Eater for a while later he became himself. We can't blame him for his fate.
So lastly i'd say that Overall Professor Snape was extreamly gud we can't judge anyone by their appearence right??
Hello, Teja you hit the nail right on the head. I don't think I could have said it better. Also I believe that people are judged way to quickly. I too was a little weary of Severus in the begining. With every new book though I started to see little changes in his character. And I do love the way it ended with him realy being the good guy.
I dont think he could have ever loved harry because Harry was James' son. Meaning., harry was the son that snape had neverhad a chance of having with Lily, because one she was dead and two she was married to James.
Also I see where she is putting into your heads about the kids being sorted too early, but if certain circumstancs had not have arisen, snape would never have changed, therefore he would have stayed as a slytherin.
His love of Lily was always there, snape was always brave (he hated being called a coward because to be perfectly honest, he wasnt) and apart from the odd mistake, he wa true to his friends, so therefore he had a few of gryffindors quaities in him already, but not enough tomake him a gryffindor. but snape looked stricken by the fact that dumbeldreo said that maybe they sorted too soon, so maybe, Snape still thought to be in slytherin would be better than being a gryffindor, even if Lily was in that house.
I think most of you guys are with the idea that the Slytherin house is mediocre or less than the other houses and that the Griffindore house is superior to other houses. I don't think Slytherins are pure evil nor do I think that they are less than any other houses. It is an undeniable fact that most Slytherins are prejudiced against Muggle borns and consider pure-bloods as first class. This perception is clearly WRONG but still, it doesn't make the Slytherin house some kind of a dump hole that less-abled or evil wizards and witches go to.
The fact that Snape can love a Muggle-born does not give him any characteristics of a Griffindor. Love is certainly not a virtue of Griffindors and Slytherins love as much as others do. It was Voldemort who was incapable of love, not all Slytherins. The house of Slytherin prefers students that are of pure generation, there wasn't a factor that suggested that Slytherins should be against Muggle-borns.
I also don't think that Snape loved Harry because he was a lot like James. However, I believe that Snape saw some likliness of Lily in him and felt obliged to make sure that Harry should live. Snape has always tried to protect Harry from harm no matter how much he detested the James-like features of him. He longed so heartily for Lily that he decided to spend his life for the well being of her son.
James and Severus regarded each other as worst enemies and quite hated each other. But James, as he is more popular and faster in action, usually got better of Severus. It was James who gave Severus a hard time in school by playing pranks on him. It was James that (in a way, because he created the situation in which Severus called Lily Mud-Blood) made him end his relationship with Lily. It was James who married Lily and had a child with her. I can't say I blame Snape for giving Harry a hard time in school. The pain of losing a loved one to an arch-enemy is one of the worst things that could happen to a person, in my opinion. It is also true that Harry stepped way over the line... I think what Snape said in PoA about Harry being expelled if he were someone else was true. Therefore, I think we shouldn't blame Snape for giving Harry a hard time afterall, Snape is only human.

I think that Snape was a good guy in the end, but he also did a lot of wrong things before he became a good guy.
Yes he loved Lily, but he also hung out with his Death Eater buddies and called others mudblood. Lily even says "You call everyone else like me mudblood" so we know that he wasn't against the common slytherin belief that purebloods were best. and no i'm not saying that all Slytherins are that way i am just saying that Severus Snape was. And I think everyone can understand why he hated Harry. Harry was kind of a symbol of the fact that Snape lost his love to James Potter, his enemy. And Snape hated James because of a mixture of Jelousy of James's talent and charm and jelousy because James ended up with Lily. And he may also have hated Harry because if it werent for Harry, Lily never would have been killed. She was only killed because of the prophecy about Harry and Voldemort. But Snape obviously still felt that even though he hated Harry he had to keep him alive because he was Lily's son. Snape saved Harry in first year with the broomstick incident and in PoA he tried to save the trio from Lupin(as a werewolf), and then of course in DH when he gives Harry his memories.
So overall I think Snape was a Slytherin with Slytherin beliefs, but he cared about Lily so he turned good in the end.

Yup, I agree, you're Victoria right? It post says anonymous but I am guessing it's you.. I feel really sorry for Snape though, he lived his life in a sort of misery.

yes I agree with the snae being a slytherin all the time.
Snape would ahve blamed himself as much as harry for lily's death, because he would have felt that had he have not told Voldemort what he had heard, Lily would have still been alive, with James, But alive.
It was only love of lily that made hgim save harry, nothing else. He hated Harry for so many reasons and mainly because he was his fathers son. He always described harry as being like "him", meaning James.
