Rubeus Hagrid can be described as the gentle half-giant. Hagrid's mother was the giantess Fridwulfa who abandoned him and his father when Hagrid was a baby (Giantesses are not known for their gentle and motherly behaviour). He was brought up by his father, who took great pride in his son. But even he soon passed away and Hagrid became an orphan. He got admitted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I think Prof. Dumbledore had got something to do with this, because Prof. Dumbledore knew that Hagrid was a half-giant. Actually giants were among the most hated of beings because of their wild and violent behaviour. Half giants have to bear the brunt of that same malice.

But unlike other giants, Hagrid looks fearsome, a hairy head and beard covers most of his face, his large size is intimidating, but Hagrid is opposite to what he looks like, gentle, caring, loving and a bit whimsical.
